Speaking with IGN recently about the decision to use an American setting, Wingard says that the story simply couldn’t be ported to anywhere in the world without fundamental adjustments to the core concept:
“In the early stages of the film I was reading all of the manga, really just looking at how does any of this translate to the United States. Ultimately, Death Note is such a Japanese thing. You can’t just say let’s port this over and it’s all going to add up. They’re two different worlds completely.
It’s one of those things where the harder I tried to stay 100% true to the source material, the more it just kind of fell apart… You’re in a different country, you’re in a different kind of environment, and you’re trying to also summarize a sprawling series into a two-hour long film.”
The result was that the themes of the original manga had to be reconsidered from an American perspective:
“Ultimately, whenever I say it’s about America, I’m looking at it like, what are the main kind of core issues going on in America, what are the things that people chalk up to conspiracy theories? What kind of weird underground programs does the government have? How do these work in the world of Death Note.”
“Death Note” is officially slated to be released on the streaming network on August 25th.

Not a peep more has been heard about the project since then, until the younger Landis appeared on The Rugged Man podcast this week and discussed some more details. First up he seems surprisingly demure regarding the chances of the remake moving forward and his ultimate goals with it:
“We’ll see if I can do it. We’ll see if I can pull it off. We’ll see if they even make it. My goal is I feel like all of the best remakes focus on one thing in the original movie, take a lot of the images of the original and then remix that really tightly. With American Werewolf I’m doing that, but I’m also just gonna try and do American Werewolf as best I can. We’ll see. I can’t make no promises.”
One thing he is happy to discuss though is a desire to approach the film from a very practical FX angle and to only apply CG judiciously in certain areas:
“The thing I would do with CGI, were I directing this film, would be leg movement, and I would have the entire wolf’s face, back and body be practical, and then I would fully CGI the legs for organic movements. If you remake American Werewolf and the transformation scene isn’t practical, you have f–ked up.”

“Transformers: The Last Knight” in its second weekend and “Wonder Woman” in its fifth are neck and neck for the third and fourth spots with both taking $4.5 million on Friday and likely to sit somewhere around $15 million each for the weekend.
Not faring so well was the Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler-led comedy “The House” which looks like it’ll end up either just over or under $10 million for the weekend after nabbing only $3.3 million on Friday.

The “Transformers” franchise is familiar with this as the previous installment “Transformers: Age of Extinction” earned more in China ($320 million) alone than it did in the United States ($245 million).
History looked to repeat with the opening day haul of “Transformers: The Last Knight” in China last week coming in at $48 million, easily beating out the $15.6 million opening day in the United States. Because of this, early projections this past week suggested the film would ultimately gross a robust $290 million within China.
Things however have taken a surprise turn though as Forbes reports that the film’s second Friday in Chinese theaters dropped by an astonishing 82.2% – falling from $48 million to just $8.5 million. The site’s columnist dubs it the “most spectacular Friday-to-Friday drop I can recall for a wide release in China.”
As a result, box-office projections for the film have dropped to $240 million across China – a blow considering the Chinese box-office market overall has grown 50% since ‘Age of Extinction’ opened.
As of today, the worldwide haul of “Transformers: The Last Knight” stands at $288 million.

“Wonder Woman” has thus far made $330.5 million domestically, above the $330.4 million cumulative gross of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” the $325 million of “Suicide Squad,” and the $291 million of “Man of Steel”.
It’s extra impressive as the opening weekend of $103 million for “Wonder Woman?s” was 37% less than ‘Dawn’, 22% smaller than ‘Squad’ and 20% smaller than ‘Man’. However, reviews and word of mouth have been so much stronger that the film is proving to have much longer legs.
Internationally the film has taken a further $335.8 million overseas in the four week period, which is the weakest of the four. The film is expected to ultimately beat “Man of Steel” ($377M) and possibly “Suicide Squad” ($420M) overseas but likely won’t match ‘Dawn’ ($543M).

In a nice change of pace, the usual city-demolishing, world-endangering antics of the average superhero movie are shunted into the background, as is the umpteenth retelling of our hero’s origin story, which is briefly alluded to here and there.
Instead, directer Jon Watts and his team of co-writers concentrate more on Peter Parker’s growing pains as both an awkward teen and budding superhero. Tom Holland lives up to the expectations set up by his introduction in “Captain America: Civil War,” and he and the filmmakers perfectly nail the character’s trademark blend of intelligence, earnestness, goofy charm, sarcastic wit, and unflagging desire to be a hero.
He’s having a lot of trouble with that last part. The aforementioned jaunt with the Avengers has left him a little restless – after all, how do you keep ’em on the farm after they’ve fought a giant-sized Paul Rudd? Eager to enter the big leagues, he can’t quite grasp the ‘don’t call us, we’ll call you’ hint he gets from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), a questionable at best role model, mentor and father figure.
Unable to tame his cockiness and desperate to prove himself, Parker insists on pursuing a group of criminals who steal high-tech junk salvaged from superhero battles and back-engineer it into homemade weapons, which they sell on the black market. The group is led by Adrian Toomes, aka the Vulture (a superb Michael Keaton), a working-class guy who feels shafted the suits of the world – both the Armani- and the Spandex-wearing varieties.
Parker enters into a cat-and-mouse game with his new nemesis while dealing with the usual high school drama of awkward romance, bullies, detention, homework, etc. – which many of us remember as being way more stressful than being shot at by bank robbers with ray guns.
It’s a simple premise, fitting neatly into MCU continuity and perfect in scale for a rookie hero, and it pays off. Keaton damn near steals the movie from Holland, find just the right amount of pathos in Toomes to make him relatable before reminding the viewer exactly how dangerous he really is, including a beautifully played scene between him and Holland that spins the movie into left field for its third act.
This is Watt’s third feature and his first of this scale, and it occasionally shows; there are a lot of characters pulled in from Spidey’s massive catalog (including a lot of fun cameos), and some of them get lost in the shuffle. His limited experience with action scenes results in the occasional pacing issue and confusing cut, but nothing catastrophic. They’re still better executed than those of some of the more recent big-budget spectacles, and the Staten Island ferry sequence is a particular standout.
More importantly, the movie has heart and an ebullience that is infectious. It’s not afraid to poke a little fun at itself (ever wonder why Spidey tends to avoid the suburbs?) or the genre in general, and reminds us that these movies can – and should – be fun.

It marks an intriguing and promising change of course in the career of filmmaker Edgar Wright, who displays more freedom, focus, and confidence as a writer and director here than in past.
Wright’s formula for the movie is both clever and cleverly executed: Its main character, Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a quiet young man who lives with his deaf, elderly foster father Joseph (C.J. Jones) and moonlights as a talented getaway driver for Doc (Kevin Spacey), a criminal mastermind to whom he owes a substantial debt. Baby also has a bad case of tinnitus, which he drowns out via his omnipresent earbuds and a large collection of iPods of varying generations, thus the immersive soundtrack that fuels the action.
And there is a lot of action. “Baby Driver” is a heist thriller at its core, and a well-designed one. Doc designs ultra-precise robberies for a living, and he never uses the same crew twice. Inbetween jobs, Baby meets a doe-eyed waitress named Debora (Lily James), with whom he decides to runaway after pulling the standard ‘one last job’.
Their plans are thrown into chaos when distrust and posturing between two of Doc’s regulars, Buddy (Jon Hamm) and Bats (Jamie Foxx), boils over into mistrust and double-crossing.
It manages to be a tight plot, little of which would matter if Wright hadn’t put together a worthwhile playlist to weave into his movie, and his is a well-curated doozy of more than two-dozen tracks that include the works of Queen, The Damned, T.Rex, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Golden Earring, Blur, Barry White, Danger Mouse, and even Dave Brubeck and Young MC.
More importantly, Wright shows an impressive knack for crime fiction storytelling, though his sensibilities are, of course, considerably more offbeat than Michael Mann or Walter Hill. “Baby Driver” is more fantasy than existential film noir, and so the action and characters are more cartoony and over-the-top.
It works like a charm, especially when Wright’s alchemy is applied to some jaw-dropping chase scenes and in-camera car stunts that make the CGI cheating of the “Fast and Furious” franchise look like amateur night. His is a deceptively simple film executed with virtuosity, and a much-needed respite to the bloated summer blockbusters clogging up the megaplexes.

Lili Taylor, Finn Jones, James Bloor, Vanessa Grasse, Sam Coleman and Sam Strike also star in the film which comes from acclaimed “Inside” directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury.
Shot in 2015, the film is now finally arriving on DirecTV on September 21st followed by a limited theatrical release and wide VOD release on October 20th.

‘Family’ co-creator Bill Burr tweeted the news on Wednesday saying “Really happy to announce there will be a season 3 of FIFF. Thanks to everyone for watching”.
The series – whose voice cast includes the likes of Laura Dern, Justin Long and Sam Rockwell – follows an Irish-American clan living in the 1970?s, a time when political correctness was the last thing on people?s minds.
Simien created the series version of ‘Dear’ in addition to executive producing. The story follows a group of students of color at a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface.

?The Gal Who Got Rattled? follows two trail bosses on the Oregon Trail and a woman on the wagon train who needs the help of one of them and who might be a marriage prospect for the other.
?The Mortal Remains? follows five very different passengers on a stagecoach of mysterious destination.
No casting or home for the series has yet been revealed beyond Annapurna Pictures which is producing. Filming begins next month on the picture which is set at the end of the Civil War.
